How To Lose Weight For Health & Longevity
Are you looking to lose weight, but tired of trying yet another fad diet that may or may not work in the short term leaving you worse off than you before?
Over the last 20 years I’ve tried Paleo, Keto, high protein, low fat etc. And over the years I’ve learned a lot. Here are a few things that matter:
Calories in, calories out matters (depends on individual and goals)
Macro nutrient profiles matter (depends on individual and goals)
Real, whole food matters (for everyone)
But there’s one thing that matters more than anything else…
THE ANSWER LIES IN YOUR METABOLISM
It boils down to how the human body and metabolism actually works. If key hormones are out of wack, your metabolism can tank and no matter how “low cal” you go (to an extent obviously) you can still struggle to lose weight.
I recently heard an interview with Dr Robert Lustig. He’s a pediatric endocrinologist at USCSF. He told the story of how back in 1975 they put 8 kids with hypothalamic obesity (hypothalamic obesity is a disorder of the hypothalamus. A key job of the hypothalamus is to regulate hormones associated with body weight such as Leptin – hunger and insulin – fat storage. Anyway they put these poor kids on a 500 calorie a day diet for one month. Only 500 calories a day!
And guess what happened? They gained weight!! That’s how important hormone regulation is in regards to weight loss/gain, metabolism and how you utilize the energy you consume through food.
When you realize that it’s not just a calories issue then, but a metabolic issue you can begin to look at the weight loss equation differently.
The secret to losing weight and keeping it off actually comes down to figuring out how to boost your metabolism so you can eat an appropriate amount of calories and still lose weight. And the way that you do this is through optimizing these hormonal levels in the body:
● Thyroid
● Testosterone
● Adrenals (cortisol)
● Estrogen
● Progesterone
● Vitamin D (hormone synergist)
● Blood sugar
● Insulin
Once those levels have been optimized along with a healthy diet, the weight loss becomes automatic. I know that may sound strange, but it’s the reason why when you were younger you may have been able to keep the weight off without trying and why as you’ve gotten older it may be more difficult to stay lean. When you were a teenager those naturally higher levels of testosterone had a big impact on your ability to eat a lot of junk without weight gain
THIS IS TRULY THE ONLY WAY
Plus, the more you diet, reduce calories and lower your carbs, the more you actually hurt your metabolism. This is what the diet “experts” never share with you when they talk about “calories in vs. calories out.” With every deprivation diet (lasting longer than 28 days) I can assure you that it will begin to lower your thyroid function, increase stress hormones (cortisol), and affect proper hormone balance.
This is why I can’t recommend enough, getting off the fad diet programs and moving towards a healthier way of losing weight. Remember, your body knows the weight it should be when healthy - you just need to rebalance the fat burning hormones that will set the stage for a healthy metabolism that naturally brings you to your optimal, healthy weight.
